In 1912, a group of members from the East Main Street United Brethren Church assembled in the home of J.W. Shannon on North Tenth Street with the Pastor, the Reverend C. W. Tyler, conducting services on Sunday afternoon. On June 1, 1912, this group of 50 persons organized the Tenth Street United Brethren Church to serve the people living on the west side of Newark.
The new organization purchased a lot on Tenth Street between West Church and ·Locust Streets in the summer of 1912 at a cost of $1,412. The tabernacle was erected at the cost of$500.00 and dedicated in September, 1912. Three years later the group purchased the adjacent house for use as a parsonage. The house and the lot next to the tabernacle were bought for $3,500.
In 1922, the church had outgrown its small quarter., They felt they should have a ·larger house of worship, and in looking for a suitable site, they found the lot at the comer
of Church and Eleventh Street, which they bought for $3,500.00. With the assistance of the U. B. Building Society and a local bank, they built this church at the cost of about $35,000.00. The Southeast Ohio Christian Endeavor Union donated a gift of $5,000.00 for the building fund and in appreciation the church was named Christian Endeavor Memorial United Brethren Church. This building was dedicated on April 8, 1923 by Bishop A. R. Clippinger. The Pastor at the the time was Pastor B. C. Peters. In 1968, the Evangelical United Brethern and the Methodist denominations merged and became known as the United Methodist Church, changing the name of the local church to the Christian Endeavor United Methodist Church.
In the late 1960's the church was again growing and the expressway was being built nearby. The church was received an offer to buy the site so they sold it and bought the land at 1415 Londondale Parkway, Newark, Ohio in 1970. The cornerstone was laid on October 17, 1971 for the new building. The building was consecrated on June 11, 1972 by Bishop F. Gerald Ensley ofthe United Methodist Church, West Ohio Area. On October 13, 1981 a final addition known as Ben Buckwalter Memorial Wing was consecrated by the Bishop Dwight E. Loder of the UMC West Ohio Area. Pastor C. Richard Frasure was serving at Christian Endeavor for both building projects.
